Profile Of makassar State University

BRIEF HISTORY

The history of Engineering Faculty went back way before the conversion from IKIP to State University of Makassar (UNM). Faculty of Engineering was known as Faculty of Technical Education (FKT) of IKIP which was the Makassar branch of IKIP in Yogyakarta. This faculty was established in the first of September 1964. Back then, FKT had only two departments which was Mechanical Engineering Department and Civil Engineering Department. On the 5 of January 1965, FKT IKIP Yogyakarta, Makassar branch has become FKT IKIP Makassar. In 1978, FKT has added another two departments which were Electrical Engineering Department and Architecture Department. Then, in 1983 FKT became Faculty of Technological and Vocational Education with six department i.e: department of Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical, Automotif, Civil and Planning  and PKK.

Then, in 1999, the President of Republic of Indonesia decided that IKIP Makassar became State University of Makassar

(UNM). With President Decree No. 93 Year 1999. The change of status from IKIP to university causes the change from FPTK to Faculty of Engineerring (FT).

Since its establishment, FT UNM has been lead by several Deans ie. Prof. DR. IR. Ramli Cambari Saka (1964-1966), Drs. R. Martoyo (1966-1971), Drs. H.M. Said Mochtar (1971-1977), Drs. H. Abdullah DP (1977-1979), Drs. M. Junus (1979-1986, 1990-1996 dan 2000-2004), Drs. H. Muh. Said Wela (1987-1990), Drs. H. Abd. Mannan, M.A (1997-2000), Drs. H. Aminuddin Bakry, M.S (2004-date.  VISION, MISSION AND GOAL

VISION

The Vision of FT UNM is one of fakulty in UNM that will become a high quality education, research and development centre for technology and vocational with educational and enterpreneurship comprehension.

Mission

To prepare for future competition, the Engineering Faculty has made its mission to:

1.      Provide a higher education in technology and vocational with educational and enterpreneurship comprehension.

2.      Developing the faculty  as a leading teaching  and research university to meet the country’s development needs.

3.      Develop the faculty organization management with orientation to  quality and professionalism.

4.      Providing services to society in effort to enhance the society’s quality of life.     Goal

Based on its vision and mission, FT UNM has several objectives:

1.      To produce graduates with high integrity, quality of faith, competencies, academic and professional achievements, inovative and responsible.

2.      To develop research and technology innovation to improve the society’s wealth.

3.      To increase education and teaching eficiencies as well as developing condusive academic environment to enhance knowledge and technology through quality education management system.

4.      To cooperate with national and international government/private organization for faculty development.

5.      To cultivate society’s participation for continuous development

  EDUCATION PROGRAM

The characteristics of Engineering Faculty’s program has been defined closely by changes experienced to meet society’s demand and government policy. At the beginning of its establishment when FT was still FKT, its main task was to produce a high quality teacher for vocational high schools. However, many of its graduates worked in other area besides education since teaching was not compulsory.

To meet the high demand for teachers through the eighties and to improve the quality of vocational education, then FT which was known then as FPTK create a curriculum that was tailored spesifically for vocational high schools.  In the beginning of 1990’s, the demand for teachers had decreased, so FPTK developed a flexible curriculum and this curriculum was approved for implementation by the national FPTK/JPTK communication forum at IKIP Semarang in 1992. This flexible curriculum’s objective was so that the education graduates could gain employment in both education as well as non-education field because these graduates has the same level of skills in technology area as with those of certificate diploma (D3) graduates.

After the conversion from IKIP to university based on the President Decree No. 93, 1999, FT has been conducted academic programs for bachelor degree in education and certificate diploma (D3) in technology. Eventhough FT was mandated to also tailor program for certificate diploma in technology, its main task is to produce professional teachers in their chosen field. To become a professional teacher, a knowledge and skills in technology is very much required. In this context, the certificate program (D3) can be regards as fertilizer for providing bachelor (S1) program, meaning that D3 program should be able to give an adequate contribution to enhance the capability of the graduates who will become teachers in vocational schools.

At the moment, FT UNM is conducting a study program for  bachelor degree (S1) in education for six field of study i.e: electronics, electrical, mechanical, automotive, civil and PKK.

And study programs for certificate diploma (D3) has six field field of study i.e: electrical, electronics, mechanical, automotive, civil, culiner anf fashion.

   CURRICULUM

The curriculum formation of FT UNM (S1 and D3 program) consist of pedagoghical competencies, professional competencies, personal competencies and social conpetencies.

Pedagoghical competencies consists of several courses in basic education and teaching and learning process. This competencies is the main characteristics that differentiate the S1 and D3 program, whereas the elements of the other three competencies are very much similar between S1 and those of D3.

Professional competencies for each field of study are (1) for electrical: power and industrial electricity, (2) electronics: telecommunication, computers and control systems (3) mechanical: production, design and maintenance (4) automotive: engine, automotive electrical resources, chasis and body (5) civil: construction, transportation, drawing and planning (6) PKK: culinary (oriental, continental, table manner, serving decoration and preservation) and fashion (design, tailoring and make-up)

All of the above competencies are defined trough courses that is covered in a number of academic unit weight for every program. For D3 program, unit weight is 112-118 sks (unit) programmed within 6 semester, whereas for S1 there is 146-148 unit scheduled for 8 semester. Semester is a time unit for academic activities which is 16 weeks of lecture or other scheduled activities together with supporting activities including exams. Sks is a measure reward to learning experiences which is gained through a scheduled activities of 1 hour of lecturer or 2 hours lab or 4 hours of field work including individual activities for 1 or 2 hours.

Students are admitted into programs in FT UNM through several category of selection: (1) student admission through special path (PMJK) for S1 program, (2) new student admission selection (SPMB) for S1 program, (3) locally written exam for D3 program and (4) student admission through MoU for D3 and S1.
